During the early 1900s, the one-piece swimsuit did not exist and women wore long tunic with tight fitting pants to the beach, wich were uncomfortable and hot.
Over the years, lenghts became shorter, thank’s in part to Coco Chanel’s introduction of above -the-knee pants.
In 1946, French fashion designer Louis Reard created a tiny swimsuit consisting of briefs and a bra and called it “Bikini”.
This name was inspired by the location in the Marshall Islands, Bikini indeed, where Americans were conducting nuclear tests.
When model Micheline Bernardini wore the bikini for the firts time for the press presentation, Reard compared the reaction of the audience to the nuclear explosion like those tested at Bikini Islands!
Initially, the Bikini had difficulty being accepted and was banned in various country such as Italy, Spain, American, Portougal, Belgium and Australia wich considered it daring, vulgar and sinful, suitable only for models but not for ordinary women.
However, the bikini had captured people’s imagination and gradually bans were removed.
Contributing to this were the many actresses and Miss who began wearing them, so much so that by 1967, according to the Times, about 60% of girls preffered the bikini to the classic one-piece swimsuit.
Today the Bikini is still the most beloved swimsuit, wich manages to adapt to every to every type of phisique.
